Description

Power steering pump bracket for Chevy LT (2020+) L82, L84, L87, and L8T engines with centered water pump

Here’s how to add a Saginaw style P-series power steering pump to your Gen 5  2020+ LT truck engine.

These engines in 1500 series trucks come without a power steering pump.  Engines in 2500 and heavier trucks usually have a Type 2 pump with a tall, attached reservoir.  Either way, you may want to use the commonly available P-series pump.  Here’s why:

  1. The vehicle you’re swapping the engine into may already have a P-series pump.  For example, all 1988-98 trucks (OBS) came with a P-series pump.  Many C10 trucks after 1980 used a P-series pump with a press-on pulley.  V-belt pulleys can be swapped for 6-groove serpentine style pulleys.
  2. The tall reservoir that came on 2500 and heavier trucks may cause hood clearance issues.
  3. If your vehicle has a hydro-boost brake system, there is a P-series pump available with a second return port.

We offer two all-new Edelmann P-series pumps: 6023R (single return) and 6091R (hydroboost dual return)

Note:

The water pump housing must have a machined surface on the passenger’s side of the casting to accept an L8T belt tensioner. The following casting numbers can be found on the face of the water pump housing: 12383468, 12687631, 12707680, 12708893.

Some 1500 pickups with 5.3L and 6.2L engines (L82 L84 and L87) have the centered water pump but did not use a spring-loaded tensioner and therefore the casting was not machined. For example, some, but not all of casting number 12383468 are machined.

All 6.6L (L8T) engines use a spring-loaded tensioner and will have the correct water pump, casting number 12707680.

FAQs

Q: I’m still a little confused about which water pump I have or need.
A: When the 2020 Gen 5 trucks were introduced, the 1500 trucks with 5.3L and 6.2L engines used electric power steering and had no power steering pump and used a stretchy serpentine belt that didn’t require a tensioner. So, the area on the pump that was designed for a tensioner was not machined.

The 2500 and heavier trucks with the 6.6L engine used a hydraulic power steering system and used a spring-loaded tensioner instead of a stretchy belt. All these water pumps were machined for the tensioner.

It appears that at some point all water pumps were machined, both GM and aftermarket pumps. The tensioner mounting area is on the passenger side of the engine. If this area has a rough, as-cast appearance, it will not support a tensioner. The machined pumps will have an obvious shiny, flat surface.

Q: I’m putting one of these late Gen 5 LT truck engines in an early 70s C10 which has a P-series (canned ham) PS pump. Will that bolt to your bracket?
A: It might bolt to our bracket but there is no serpentine style pulley that will work with any pump that has a tapered shaft, keyway and holds the pulley on with a nut. These were used up until around 1974. From 1975 onwards, pulleys were a press-on style. Around 1980, the mounting holes started having metric threads and the bolts we supply with our pumps will be metric. And finally, 6-groove serpentine pulleys were standard from 1988 on and these will fit pumps back to 1975.

Q: What if I want to add an AC compressor?
A: We have two options:
Use K10755 power steering bracket shown on this page and then add a K10750 AC bracket which mounts the Sanden Mini compressor on the passenger side. We think this is the preferred combination because it places the AC compressor and the power steering pump in the most convenient locations. And it makes for a nicely balanced engine bay appearance. The Sanden Mini has plenty of capacity for a typical truck cab when teamed up with a high-efficiency condenser and a properly sized fan.
Use K10581 which is a combination bracket that mounts a Sanden HD compressor but uses the smaller Type 2 power steering pump. Both the AC compressor and the power steering pump mount on the driver’s side of the engine.
