How to Build the Ultimate OBS 454 SS Clone

A guide on how to build an OBS 454 SS clone

Wayne Powell |

The 1988-1998+ Chevrolet OBS (Old Body Style) pickup is a design icon. While the 305 and 350 Small Block Chevy engines (and even the 4.3L V6) were workhorses, many of you are looking for that legendary Big Block grunt. Whether you’re tired of a high-mileage SBC or you’re chasing the ghost of the famous 1990-1993 454 SS, a Big Block Chevy (BBC) swap is the ultimate power move.
However, the biggest hurdle in a BBC engine swap isn't dropping the block in engine bay, you can just use BBC motor mounts from the 2500/3500 7.4L trucks.  A bigger issue is the front drive system.  Yes, 454 engines from 1988-95 came with a factory serpentine system but, they are hard to find, expensive if you find them, and they are made from cast steel, making them heavy.
Here’s the good news.  You probably already have brackets and accessories you need. That makes them inexpensive and they are cast aluminum, not steel.  Yep, we have a way for you to re-use your SBC brackets and accessories from a 305, 350 or 4.3L V6.  It’s the first product we ever designed here at Kwik Performance and we’re still amazed at how many fellow BBC fans are still out there.

The Secret to a Clean Swap: Reusing Your Factory Serpentine Brackets

One of the best features of the 1988-1998+ Chevy trucks is the factory serpentine accessory system. It’s compact, reliable, and keeps everything tucked in tight. Traditionally, if you swapped in any BBC, you had to hunt down rare (and expensive) BBC-specific brackets or spend thousands on aftermarket billet kits.
Our Big Block Chevy Conversion Plates change the game. These plates allow you to bolt your original SBC factory serpentine brackets directly onto a Big Block engine.

A chart that helps customers identify which Kwik Performance plates they need to buy to complete a 454 SS clone based on which small block Chevy engine they have

Why Use Kwik Performance Conversion Plates?

  1. Maintain Factory Geometry: When swapping an engine, belt alignment is critical. Even a tiny misalignment can lead to noise and even thrown belts. Our plates are CNC-machined to ensure that the belt path remains perfectly linear, utilizing the proven geometry of the GM serpentine system.  Everything has been matched to the original 454 crank and water pump pulley specs and belt path.
  2. Cost-Effective Performance: Why buy a new A/C compressor, alternator, and power steering pump if your current ones work perfectly? By using the Kwik conversion plates, you save hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars by retaining your existing 1988-1995 accessories.
  3. The "Cloned" 454 SS Look: The original 454 SS trucks had a special look when you opened the hood. Our conversion plates allow for a "factory plus" look. Your Big Block will look like it came from the assembly line in Janesville, since your factory SBC brackets and accessories appear at first glance to be the same as the OEM BBC brackets.  Once again, the SBC brackets are more desirable because they are cast aluminum rather than the BBC cast steel.

Technical Compatibility: What You Need to Know

To ensure a successful "Kwik" installation, keep these technical specs in mind:

  • Engine Block: Our conversion plates fit standard and tall deck Big Block Chevy (366, 396, 427, 454, 502, 572).
  • Water Pump: Designed to work with a 454 reverse rotation BBC long water pump.
  • Harmonic Balancer: See the chart above to match your Mark IV or Gen 5/Gen 6 balancer to the correct conversion kit.

Pro Tip: When performing this swap, it's the perfect time to inspect your radiator. Big Blocks generate significantly more heat than the 350 SBC. We recommend upgrading to a 454-spec radiator to keep those extra cubic inches cool.  And then add our Kwik Performance electric fan and controller kit (coming soon).  Sign up to our mailing list near the bottom of our contact page to be notified of all new product releases.

Build Your Legend with Kwik Performance

We’ve been using the 454 SS clone idea as an example but these conversion kits work for any BBC swap.  Maybe you want more pulling power for your C2500 or K3500.  Maybe you’re building a street/strip machine.  Or, maybe you need more torque to move that Caprice-based Donk.  Either way, don't let bracket frustration stall your build.

Big Block Chevy Conversion FAQs

Q: Will these kits work on my 1988-1998+ Chevy OBS truck?
A: Yes, these plates are designed specifically to allow owners of 1988-1998+ GM trucks to bolt their original Small Block Chevy (SBC) factory serpentine brackets directly onto a Big Block Chevy (BBC).

Q: Can I reuse my factory A/C compressor?
A: Yes, our conversion plates allow you to reuse the factory OEM SBC AC compressor bracket. However, the original R4 compressor used R-12 refrigerant and mineral oil. If you are switching to R-134 A, you must flush the system to remove old oil and replace it with PAG 150 oil to prevent compressor failure. Further, old R4 compressors often have rubber seals that leak when exposed R-134a refrigerant. So, you should at least replace the shaft seal and O-rings with R-134a compatible versions if you would like to attempt to reuse your factory compressor.

Q: What if I want to upgrade to a more modern A/C compressor during the swap?
A: We offer a dedicated R4-to-Sanden Mini conversion kit that is fully compatible with our BBC serpentine conversion plates (K10473). This is ideal if you want a lighter, smoother, and more reliable compressor.

Q: Which Big Block engines are compatible?
A: These plates work with standard deck or  tall deck Big Block Chevy engines, including the 366, 396, 427, 454, 502 and 572.

Q: Do I need to buy different accessories like the power steering pump or alternator?
A: No. The primary benefit of the conversion kits shown in the chart above is that they allow you to retain your existing 1988-1998+ factory accessories, both V8 and V6 engines, saving you the cost of sourcing rare BBC-specific brackets or expensive aftermarket kits.

Q: Is this a "bolt-on" installation?
A: Yes, the mechanical installation is straightforward and designed to eliminate the hassle of sourcing individual parts and guessing what will fit. We’ve had customers tell us they were able to unbolt their SBC brackets, lay them to the side, stuff in the BBC engine, bolt on our adapter plates, reinstall the SBC brackets and never even had to break the AC or power steering lines.

Technical Tips for Your 454SS Clone Build

  • Year-Specific Accuracy: If you decide to use our “conversion on top of a conversion” GM R4 to Sanden Mini AC conversion kit, you’ll want to use one of our AC hose kits.  There are three different part numbers depending on year and which condenser you have.
  • Cooling System: Because a Big Block generates more heat than the original SBC, we highly recommend upgrading to our Kwik Kool electric fan and controller package (coming soon) to ensure your new engine stays cool under load.

The Kwik Performance Strategic Build Guide: The BBC Swap & 454SS Clone

Project Overview: The "Wayne Method" for Swap Success

As Wayne (our founder/owner) highlighted in our project management YouTube video, the difference between a finished truck and a "project in a box" is in the planning phase.

  • The Goal: A 454SS clone that looks factory and drives with modern reliability.
  • The Strategy: Don't just swap the block; swap the system. By using the Kwik Performance conversion system, you are choosing a path that preserves the factory-engineered serpentine geometry while allowing for modern accessory upgrades.
  • Wayne’s Tip: Instead of trying to track down those elusive 454 serpentine brackets or custom-fabricating brackets (which stalls a project), use our Kwik bolt-on solutions to keep your momentum high, your budget low and your truck on the road sooner.

Critical Considerations: System Health & Upgrades

Since the Big Block fits the OBS engine bay like it was born there, your focus should be on the parts that support that extra displacement.

  • Thermal Management: A Big Block is a heat factory compared to a 350 SBC. We recommend upgrading to electric fans (see our Kwik fan and relay package coming soon). It’s a direct fit for the OBS radiator but offers the cooling capacity required for the 7.4L (or larger) engine.
  • The "Weak Link" Inspection: Before bolting your old Small Block accessories onto the new Big Block, inspect them. If your alternator is whining or your power steering pump is leaking, now is the time to upgrade. A BBC swap is only as reliable as its oldest accessory.

The A/C Modernization Path: GM R4 to Sanden Mini (for 1988-95 trucks)

The original GM R4 "pancake" compressor was functional, but it’s notorious for being heavy, parasitic, and prone to "belly leaks."

  • The Solution: While our plates allow you to keep the R4, we highly recommend the Sanden Mini conversion.
  • Why Sanden Mini? It’s lighter, significantly more efficient and known for its reliability.
  • Seamless Integration: When you switch to the Sanden Mini using our conversion kit, you’ll need the correct Kwik Performance AC Hose Kit.

Note on Year-Specific Hoses: 1988-1995 trucks saw changes in refrigerant (R12 to R134a) and condenser fittings. Whether you have the '88-'93 R12 system or the later '94-'95 R134a metric setup, we have a pre-crimped, bolt-on hose kit that eliminates the need for custom hose shops.  If you have a 1990 truck, check first to see which condenser style you have.

Here’s What You Need to Complete that GM R4 Replacement

  • Conversion Plates: Choose the correct part number combinations from the chart we showed you earlier or from our website.
  • A/C Upgrade: GM R4 to Sanden Mini Conversion Kit.
  • The Final Link: OBS-Specific AC Hose Kit (Matched to your truck's year and your new Sanden compressor).
  • The Manifold: K10550 Straight AC Manifold (Required for the cleanest R4-to-Mini routing).
