The Ultimate OBS R4-to-Sanden Conversion

A graphic showing the ultimate OBS R4 to Sanden Complete Conversion Package with all of its components

If you're driving an '88 to '95 Chevy or GMC truck, you know the struggle. The factory R4 compressor (that round, "pancake" looking thing) wasn't exactly GM's finest moment. They are notorious for leaking around the case seals and they seem to have a lifespan shorter than a set of cheap tires.

We've offered the bracket to swap that R4 for a modern Genuine Sanden Mini (SD7B10) compressor for years. But the number one question we get is: "Great, I've got the compressor bolted on...now how do I hook up the hoses?"

We finally made it easy with an OBS R4 to Sanden Mini Conversion Package. We've bundled the bracket, the Sanden SD7B10 compressor, and the exact A/C hose kits you need into one complete conversion package. No more hunting down a shop to crimp custom lines.

Which OBS R4 to Sanden Kit do I Need?

GM loved to change things up under the hood during these years. While the '88 through '93 trucks generally stayed with SAE fittings, the way those fittings connect to the condenser changed and switched between male and female connections depending on the exact production date.

To make sure you get the right hose kit, here is the breakdown:

  • K10762Covers 1988 through some 1990 models. (SAE fittings, male and female)
  • K10763Covers some 1990 through 1993 models. (SAE fittings, both male).
  • K10764Covers 1994 through 1995 models. This is where GM switched over to metric fittings (both male).

Not sure which one you have? If you're staring at a 1990 and aren't sure which way the wind blows on your fittings, don't guess. We put together a specific technical guide to help you identify your condenser in 30 seconds.

What's in the Box?

When you order the full conversion package, you're getting:

  • The Conversion Bracket: CNC-machined to bolt the Sanden AC compressor exactly where the R4 used to sit.
  • The Sanden SD7B10 Compressor: Brand new, genuine Sanden quality.
  • The Vehicle-Specific Hose Kit: High-quality barrier hoses designed for R134a, with the correct fittings to mate your new compressor to your specific factory condenser and evaporator. We even include a new accumulator/direr and a trinary safety switch.

Why the Sanden Mini?

The Sanden SD7B10 is smaller, lighter, and much more efficient than the old R4. Even though we call it a "mini," it has more than enough cooling capacity to keep an OBS regular or extended cab ice-cold. Plus, it pulls significantly less power from the engine, which lets your truck run a little smoother when the A/C kicks on.

Stop Chasing Leaks

There is no reason to keep struggling with almost 40-year-old compressor technology. Bolting this kit on is one of the single best "quality of life" upgrades you can do for your OBS.
